Manukura, the white kiwi chick hatched on 01MAY at Pukaha Mount Bruce, this week got its first feel for the outside world when it graduated from the centre’s kiwi house nursery to an outdoor enclosure in the forest reserve. Darren Page, Department of Conservation Captive Breeding Ranger at Pukaha Mount Bruce is pictured here with his precious charge out of the kiwi nursery and into an outdoor enclosure. The chick, named Manukura by local iwi Rangitane, can be seen there each Sunday at 2.00pm for at least the next 4 months. Pukaha Mount Bruce is on State Highway 2, twenty minutes’ drive north of Masterton and 1 hour 45 minutes from Wellington. www.pukaha.org.nz

Southern Cross and Aorangi want to merge their Palmerston North hospitals. The two organisations have applied to the Commerce Commission for approval. The commission will need to work out whether the merger will substantially lessen competition and has welcomed public submissions on the proposal. Both Southern Cross and Aorangi provide specialist consulting and elective surgery services in Palmerston North. Even if there is found to be substantially less competition as a result of the move, the commission may still decide the public benefit outweighs any disadvantage.

A couple "on the bones of our arses'' have stepped forward to claim one of two $17.7 million Powerball prizes. They have hauled in the fifth-equal largest Powerball prize. The married couple, who wish to remain anonymous, bought their Lotto Powerball ticket at Dannevirke New World. ``We've been on the bones of our arses forever, and have never won anything before, so this win is just magic, but very hard to take in,'' the wife told NZ Lotteries.
